When carpenter ants begin to swarm, it is a sure sign that Spring is near. If you see large winged ants on the outside of your house, no cause for immediate panic. These are reproductive carpenter ants which occupy every tree or wood remnant in our forests. Their presence outside is normal.
If you see winged or non-winged ants inside your house then it is time for concern. At this time of year, any active workers are probably coming from an indoor colony. If winged ants are inside, they probably swarmed from an inside colony. Since Carpenter Ants are the number one wood destroying insect in the Northwest, it is not a good idea to ignore them.
